A number of Members of Parliament (MPs) have expressed concerns about irregularities in the results of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) for the year 2023.
Led by Tinderet MP Julius Melly and Marakwet West legislator Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich, the MPs plan to summon Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to explain the issues in parliament.
They believe that the exam was not fair and credible, with some students from the same school receiving identical marks and others being awarded marks for papers they did not take.
The MPs, particularly Toroitich, have stated that the Education Committee will conduct investigations, and those responsible for mismanaging the KCPE will be held accountable.
“The exam was not fair and credible. How is it possible students from same school score similar marks? Some got marks of the paper they did not sit for,”Toroitich added.
Melly, who chairs the National Assembly Education Committee, has also raised doubts about the credibility of the results released by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
“When you see students scoring the same marks, there is a problem. And it has to be either the person who marked the papers, or the exam supervision exercise,” Melly said.
Kesses MP Julius Ruto expressed his disappointment, stating that the incident has shattered the hopes of many students who were aiming to excel in the exam.
The MPs have called for a remarking of the exams.
Morever,KNEC acknowledged irregularities in some candidates’ results which had errors in the alignment of marks and grades in Kiswahili.
