A police officer was killed on Monday during a shootout in Samburu East Sub County.
The incident took place while a team of patrol officers from various counties were tracking down the stolen cows.
Patrol teams
The patrol teams, consisted of officers from GSU Losesia, cmm Aremet GSU, cmm Mariara GSU.
Among others included matabithi GSU, and officers from Archer’s Post Police Station, joined forces to recover the stolen cows.
Cows stolen
At around 1:30 PM, in the Ntilal area within Laresoro’s location, the footprints of the stolen cows got mixed with the footprints of local cows.
However, the patrol teams persevered and eventually located 38 cows.
Four of those cows were marked identical to the stolen cows, while the others had faded fresh markings.
The team decided to bring all the cows back to Archer’s Post Police Station for further investigation.
Tragic Ambush
Tragically, while transporting the cows back to the station, the team encountered an ambush just 3 kilometers away from the scene.
A fierce shootout ensued, lasting for approximately 3 hours.
Death of police officer
Meanwhile,Police Constable Victor Kosgey was shot above the left eye.
The bullet passed through the rear skull, causing fatal injuries.
He therefore lost his life while defending his fellow officers.
However,the cows had scattered in different directions, forcing the officers to retreat and leave the animals behind to rescue Victor.
PC Victor Kosgey was immediately rushed to Archer’s Post Sub County Hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
In the aftermath, one suspect identified as Ntaroi Learao, who was in charge of the stolen livestock-
was arrested and is currently detained at the police station.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further police action will be taken.
Consequently,the patrol team’s vehicles sustained multiple gunshots during the intense gunfight.
The affected vehicles include GKB 757G, GKB 282Y, GKB 990T, GKB 197T, and KBY 683C.
The case has been reported to the DCI Mutuati for further handling.
Therefore,the body of PC Victor Kosgey will be transferred to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem.
