Directorate of Criminal investigation(DCI) have apprehended seven suspects involved in a massive gold scam worth Sh2.85 billion in Kileleshwa, Nairobi.
The DCI operation Support unit (OSU) received information about the scam from the Kilimani Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer-
prompting them to deploy a surveillance team to protect two Malaysian nationals who were the targets.
However,the suspects, operating under the name Rock Africa Minier company, contacted the victims through a social media platform in October 2023.
They therefore claimed to have 500 kilograms of gold to sell for USD 19 million (equivalent to Sh2.85 billion).
Thus the victims had already sent USD 6,350 to members of the gang based in Cameroon-who then referred them to their Kenyan accomplices.
“In the deal ,the complaints had already sent USD 6,350 to members of the Gang based in Cameron who refered the two to there Kenyan accomplices,” DCI said.
The OSU followed the scammers as they picked up the two foreigners from their hotel in Kilimani.
Incident unfold
The suspects drove a Toyota Noah with registration number KCW 835U.
The victims were taken to a private house on Mageta Road in Kileleshwa,where the surveillance team closely monitored the situation.
However, the team was locked out when the main gate was shut.
The OSU gained entry into the compound and pursued the suspects who attempted to escape.
The Arrest
Seven suspects, including two G4S security guards, were arrested, while two others managed to escape.
The apprehended individuals are identified as Didier Muke (a Congolese with a pending case), Brian Otiende, Patrick Otieno, Joshua Ngandi.
Others included Charles Vincent Njerenga (currently hospitalized), Mark Kabete (G4S), and Ken Kiboi (G4S).
During the operation,
Consequently,various exhibits were recovered, including metallic boxes, 84 gold-coated metallic bars, smelting tools, and computers.
Among others were documents, stamps for Ace Point International Limited, and assorted G4S uniforms.
Vehicles used
Additionally, several vehicles that were proceeds of the crime were seized,including a white Toyota Noah with registration number KCW 835U, a black Toyota Crown with registration number KDB 090W,
A white Mercedes Benz with registration number KCQ 138T, a white Toyota G-Touring with registration number KAX 260R,
and a G4S-branded white Toyota double cab with registration number KCH 622T.
All the exhibits have been secured as the suspects undergo processing for arraignment tomorrow.
Morever,DCI OSU continues to crack down on criminal activities, ensuring the safety and security of all residents and visitors in the country.
