Haiti:In response to a wave of violence triggered by a gang attack on Haiti’s main prison, the government has declared a state of emergency and imposed a nighttime curfew.
The measures, effective from Sunday to Wednesday, aim to restore order and regain control of the situation.
The state of emergency and curfew will be implemented in the Ouest region, which includes the capital city of Port-au-Prince.
The government has the option to extend these measures if necessary.
Economy Minister Patrick Michel Boisvert, serving as the acting prime minister,
signed the statement announcing the state of emergency and curfew.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who was recently in Kenya to finalize an agreement for a UN-backed law and order mission, was not present.
Therefore,The government’s objective is to bring back stability and ensure the appropriate actions are taken to address the ongoing crisis.
The recent prison break, which allowed thousands of inmates to escape, has further intensified the already dire situation in Haiti.
However,Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s visit to Kenya signaled a commitment to seeking international assistance-
in tackling the rampant gang violence that plagues the Caribbean nation.
Consequently, the agreement signed aimed to deploy police from Kenya to lead the UN-backed mission.
With the state of emergency and curfew in effect, the government hopes to quell the violence, restore order, and regain control of the situation in Haiti.
The measures reflect the urgency to address the ongoing crisis and protect the safety and well-being of the people.
