423,394 cases filed across the country while 419, 262 resolved

Judiciary has reported to record a case Clearance Rate for the Financial year 2022/23 at 99 per cent which marks a 5 per cent improvement from the previous financial year 2020/2021.

In a report released on Friday named State of the Judiciary and the Administration of Justice Annual report (SOJAR), a total of 419,262 of 423,394 cases filed were resolved in the stated period.

Speaking during the launch, Chief Justice Martha Koome said, this milestone shows the commitment of the judiciary to ensure equity and justice is served to every Kenyan who seeks justice.

“During the FY2022/2023, a total of 423,394 cases were filed in all courts across the country while 419, 262 cases were resolved.

This resulted in a Case Clearance Rate of 99 percent which is an improvement of 5 percentage points from the lady financial year,” read the report.

She says that Criminal cases contribute to 60 per cent of all the registered cases.

“The Magistrates’ courts handles a total of 326, 855 cases being filled within this courts and a total of 320,143 matters were resolved during the same period,”she added.

The report further stated that the overall case backlog for instance those that have been in court for over a year in the judiciary went down by 17 per cent from 336,119 cases to 276, 678 cases at the end of June 2023.

The report also indicated that cases filled through the E-filing have continued to rise reaching 100,295 cases filed in the end of the financial year.

“Court users are generally satisfied with the system and its capabilities with the overall satisfaction index being 67.5 percent.

A majority indicated that the system had greatly improved the speed of filing cases as well as ease of tracking court documents,” read the report.
