A Man who is Accused of Murdering his girlfriend in the United States Escaped on Wednesday in Police Custody in muthaiga station, Nairobi.
Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangethe, the man accused of murdering his girlfriend fleeing to Kenya, has managed to escape from police custody.
The incident took place at the Muthaiga police station,
where Kangethe was being held pending a ruling on his extradition to face a first-degree murder charge.
According to the police statement, Kangethe made his escape while meeting with his lawyer on Wednesday evening.
Thus,John Maina Ndegwa, who claimed to be the lawyer-
requested to speak with his client privately.
The request was granted, and Ndegwa was allowed access to Kangethe.
However, within minutes, Kangethe managed to slip away, leaving the supposed lawyer behind.
Nairobi police Commander Adamson Bungei was immediately informed of the escape and rushed to the station.
He expressed his disappointment and described the incident as “embarrassing” for the police force.
Additionally,as a result of the escape, four police officers who were on duty during the incident-
as well as Ndegwa, have been apprehended.
The escape of Kangethe has raised serious concerns about the security protocols in place at the police station.
It is unclear how Kangethe managed to flee undetected,
especially considering the gravity of the charges against him.
The police department now faces scrutiny and pressure to ensure that such a lapse in security does not occur again.
Margaret Mbitu, the victim of the alleged murder, lost her life on October 31, 2023.
Kangethe had been awaiting a decision on his extradition to the United States to face trial for the crime.
Therefore,the escape of a murder suspect poses a significant setback in the pursuit of justice for Mbitu and her grieving family.
