A Chadian national, Abdoulaye Tamba Kouro, has been sentenced to four years imprisonment by a Milimani court on charges of currency forgery and obtaining money by false pretense.
According to the prosecution, led by Virginia Kariuki, the suspect was found in possession of papers intended to resemble and pass as currency notes.
“The pre-sentence report filed by the Probation and Aftercare Service indicated that the suspect showed no remorse for his actions and posed a flight risk, leading to the decision of the sentence,”Office of Director of Public Prosecution stated
During the trial, the prosecution presented seven witnesses and fifteen exhibits to support the case against Abdoulaye.
The court found him guilty and imposed the judgement as indicated.
First, was a Four years imprisonment without the option of a fine for possession of counterfeit currency notes,
Second, was two years imprisonment without the option of a fine for forgery, and
Third, was a fine of Sh400,000 (or two years imprisonment in default) for obtaining money by false pretense.
Therefore, sentences will run concurrently.
However,the court heard that on October 1, 2018, Abdoulaye was found in possession of 54,000 pieces of forged US dollars and 19,000 pieces of forged EURO notes at a residence in Westlands, Nairobi.
The total value of the counterfeit currency was estimated at Ksh960,120,000.
Additionally, Abdoulaye, together with accomplices, are reported to have obtained USD 6,796 from a man named Makau Muteke on March 9, 2017.
They falsely promised to invest the funds on his behalf.
