National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has dismissed opposition leader Raila Odinga’s demand for a significant reduction in fuel prices.
Ichung’wah emphasized that fuel prices are determined by market forces and not solely by the government.
Raila had called for a decrease of around Sh 50 in line with the global drop in petroleum product prices.
“Azimio LA Umoja Leader demands that local prices should be reduced by 48 shillings or 50,”Ichungw’a stated.
He further added that,”We have information that global price has gone down.”
However, Ichungw’a opposed Raila asking him how he was able to determine the margin of reduction of the price of fuel.
“I have heard him say that the prices of fuel should be reduced by sh 45.
I am surprised how he arrived at those figures because the price of fuel is determined by supply and demand,”he said.
He accused the opposition of politicizing the issue, despite the government’s limited control over fuel prices.
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) recently announced that the price of super petrol in Nairobi remained unchanged, while diesel and kerosene dropped by Sh 2.
EPRA’s Director General, Daniel Kiptoo, assured consumers that the government would cushion them from the impact of increased landed costs.
The government has opted to stabilize pump prices for the November-December 2023 pricing cycle.
