Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union(KMPDU) Western officials have called off the strike which was set to begin on December 10th.
The call-off comes after a daylong meeting between KMPDU western officials and Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, which focused on resolving the concerns raised by the Union about the health workers welfare in the region.
“Today we have come to announce officially that the Union officials have called off the strike that was supposed to begin on the 10th of December. We don’t want services to be interrupted with,” Governor Fernandes Barasa said during the strike call-off brief.
“I thought it was important to talk to the media and also to assure the public that our medical services will not be interrupted as we progress through this December festive season,” the governor added.
Further, the union has voiced its appreciation to the governor for discussing the concerns that the Union had raised.
The matters majorly included the issuing of a comprehensive medical cover to the Union members and NHIF cover for Kakamega county staff.
“We have had several meetings with the executive team of the Governor of Kakamega county. We had a meeting today morning, and we have agreed on issues that we are raising,” said Dr Joseph Makomere, the chairperson person, KMPDU western Branch.
The Union has stated that the lack of comprehensive medical cover puts medical personnel at heightened risk and they cannot work without medical cover.
