The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has released a statement addressing the murder case of Meru-based Blogger, Daniel Muthiani Bernard, also known as Sniper.
The ODPP aims to clarify certain facts and refute allegations of inaction in the case.
According to the ODPP, the suspect in the murder case, known as Supuu wa Mioro, was initially arrested on suspicion of the offense of abduction.
Clarification
The ODPP states that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) requested custodial orders to detain the suspect.
However, a Meru court released the suspect on a cash bail of sh 20,000.
Thus,scheduling the mention of the case for January 5, 2024.
“The Chief Magistrate’s court in Maua, Meru declined to grant custodial orders as given to the DCI through the ODPP but instead granted the suspect a cash bail of sh 20,000.00.”
“And ordered the suspect to report to the police station every 14 days. The court also set the application for mention on 5 January 2024”, The ODPP’s statement read.
In response to the recovery of Daniel’s body,
the ODPP instructed the DCI to conduct investigations into the murder and submit an inquiry file.
However, the ODPP has not yet received the inquiry file.
The ODPP has pledged to provide appropriate directions once they receive the file.
“Following the recovery of the body of the abducted person, the ODPP directed the DCI to undertake investigations for the offence of murder.”
“And submit the resultant inquiry file for perusal and further directions. The ODPP has not received the inquiry file into the offence of murder to date”, the statement read.
Concerns
Digital Strategist Dennis Itumbi had claimed that the ODPP failed to offer directions to the DCI in Meru regarding the investigations.
Itumbi provided documents to support his argument.
Details of the case indicate that Daniel Muthiani went missing on December 2 after receiving a call from the main suspect.

It is reported that the suspect had planned to arrange a meeting with a senior politician-
in relation to claims made about them on social media.
The blogger’s post-mortem report, conducted revealed that he was tortured before being strangled to death.
The ODPP’s statement seeks to clarify the actions taken in relation to the murder case of Daniel Muthiani Bernard.
They emphasize the need for the inquiry file to initiate further proceedings.
