The Governor of Mandera Mohamed Adan has shown his concerns on the current situation of floods in northern Kenya.
According to a press statement, Mohamed said that the county has endured a prolonged and recurring period of drought.
He said they are grateful for the recent arrival of rains but regrettably the rains have unleashed devastating floods.
“Regrettably, the recent turn of events has shown us that nature can be both a giver and a taker.
While the rains have successfully alleviated our water scarcity, they have also unleashed devastating floods that have brought sorrow and hardship to our beloved county,” Governor Mohamed said.
Further, the governor said that the heavy rains has caused loss of three lives , including an elderly mother and two students who had recently completed their KCPE exams.
Additionally, Governor Mohamed noted that some local schools have submerged, hindering the education of students, and the disruption of vital local institutions, including hospitals which he said has a significant impact on service provision in the community.
“As of today, more than 12,000 households are currently affected by these devastating floods, and approximately 4,000 households have been displaced from their homes.
He however added that “impact of these floods is widespread and has left many of our fellow citizens in dire need of assistance across the country,”he said.
Among the submerged towns are Elwaq, Shimpir Fatuma, Damasa, dariqa, Lafey among many others,Governor Mohamed said.
“These families are grappling with the loss of their homes, possessions, and in many cases, their livelihoods.”
Adding that,”The situation is dire and the numbers of affected individuals are expected to rise as the rain continues pouring,” The Governor added.
The governor noted that about 80 per cent of all roads in Mandera County, including the A13 managed by KENHA and Group C of KERRA roads in all sub-counties, have been seriously affected.
He said these road issues are anticipated to result in limited movement and restricted access to essential goods and services in towns and villages across the county.
Governor Mohamed further Announced that The County Government of Mandera and its leadership at large is fully committed to providing immediate relief to those affected by these floods.
“We will provide food and non-food items to the affected population, ensuring that their basic needs are met during this challenging period. In addition, we will provide sanitation items to prevent waterborne diseases, recognizing the importance of safeguarding public health in the wake of this disaster,”The governor noted
