Woman Brutally Murdered by Younger Brother over KSh2,000 Government Cash Transfer
In a shocking incident that has left residents of Male village, Tigithi location in Laikipia County in disbelief, a 49-year-old woman was brutally murdered by her younger brother.
The deceased, Rebecca Muthoni, was fatally struck on the head with a hammer following a quarrel over KSh2,000 from the Government’s cash transfer program,
which was intended for the upkeep of their ailing mother.
However, the confrontation between Muthoni and her brother, Joseph Gitahi, took a tragic turn when he resorted to violence.
Muthoni was rushed to Naromoru Level Four Hospital for treatment but sadly succumbed to her injuries.
Tigithi location chief, Wilson Thuo, confirmed the incident, highlighting that Gitahi later surrendered himself to Matanya Police Station –
where he is now awaiting court appearance to face murder charges.
Consequently, the motive behind the brutal attack was the whereabouts of the KSh2,000 that Gitahi had received as part of the Government’s monthly pay for the older people under the Inua Jamii Program.
Muthoni had questioned him about the money, triggering the violent response.
Additionally,Witnesses, including the mother of the deceased, Mary Wahito, watched helplessly as Gitahi threatened and ultimately carried out his heinous act-
when striking his sister with a hammer.
Local residents have described Gitahi as a troublemaker in the village, known for his addiction to alcohol and narcotics.
The mother and other family members are now urging the Government to ensure that Gitahi receives a life imprisonment sentence,
stating that they will not accept him back into the community if he is released.
This tragic incident has shed light on the issue of drug and substance abuse in the area.
The residents have condemned the incident and are calling on the government to intervene.
They believe that such acts of violence may be a direct result of the rampant drug abuse prevalent in the community.
Gitahi was arraigned before a Nanyuki court on Monday; however, he did not enter a plea to the murder charges.
The DCI officers requested more time to conduct a postmortem examination and a mental assessment of the suspect.
The shocking murder of Rebecca Muthoni has left the community in Tigithi village devastated and seeking justice for their loss.
However this serves as a grim reminder of the destructive consequences that can arise from disputes over money –
and the urgent need for intervention to address drug and substance abuse in the area.
The court proceedings will determine the fate of Joseph Gitahi, the assailant, as the community hopes for a fair and just outcome.
